Shelby Hargis Oakley Castle

July 29, 1941 — March 7, 2021

Mrs. Shelby Hargis Oakley Castle passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the age of 79 surrounded by her family. Born in Person County, NC on July 29, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Hope Tuck Hargis and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Allen Castle. Shelby was a retired secretary with Duke University Medical Center Facilities Planning and Design, who designed the Children's Health Center at Duke.She also worked for the architectural firm who designed "The Dean Dome" at the UNC. She kept the books at her first husband's company and was a member of the Women of the Moose.After retiring, Shelby went back to school to obtain a CNA certification and provided home care for her special needs granddaughter. Her faith and her family were the most important aspects of her life. She was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and had served as the church pianist in several churches until arthritis prevented her from playing. Left to cherish her memories is a daughter, Angela Oakley Barbar of Roxboro, NC; son, Kevin “Pete” Oakley and wife, Tina of Roxboro, NC; step children, Tiara Timmerman and husband, David of Windsor, SC; Wendy Rigsbee, Mitzie Castle, Tonia Manzulich, Venna Wood, Tom Castle II and April Delgado; and numerous other family and friends. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Bev Jo Ballou, Lewis Winstead IV, Darmon Timmerman, Karlton Timmerman, Ty Oakley, Dara Timmerman, and Hope Barbar, Nikki Barbar and her husband, Devin; and three great grandchildren, Abby, D.J., and Hayden; as well as a multitude of other step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by a step daughter, Lela Jarrard; and grandchild, Christopher Brent Phillips; and son-in-law, Jerry Barbar. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Westwood Baptist Church.Services for Shelby may be viewed online at https://youtu.be/Vc4jC3fkAMA
