Babe Ruth Matthews

Babe Ruth Matthews of Bullock, NC, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the age of 91. Born in Granville County on April 16, 1932, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Ethel Hutchins Matthews and was married to Delma Allgood Matthews, who survives. Mr. Matthews was a United States Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He provided for his family by working as a NC Forest Ranger and farming. Mr. Matthews was the definition of an outdoorsman and had great respect for nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and appreciated life in its simplest form.

In addition to his wife of 68 years, Mr. Matthews is survived by his children, Harry Matthews (Nancy) of Bullock, Angela McMullen (David) of New Castle, VA, Barbara Melton (Andy) of Oxford, Phillip Matthews of Bullock and Ethel Matthews of Bullock; grandchildren, Kevin, Brandie, Steven, Becky, Amanda, Jessica; great grandchildren, Aundrea, Trinity, Ayden, Lucas, Isaac and Gabriel and a sister, Cilla Matthews Fox of Conover. He was preceded in death by siblings, Belle Fox, Faucette Matthews, Kathleen Critcher, Etta Jane Tillotson, and Margaret Robinette.

A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the chapel of Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, 703 Virginia Avenue, Clarksville, VA 23927.

Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
