Hazel Lee Pridgen Betts

June 25, 1930 — November 17, 2021

Hazel Lee Pridgen Betts, born 6/25/30, died peacefully in her home on 11/17/21 surrounded by her children, her dog Maggie and under Amedysis Hospice care. Preceding Hazel in death were her parents, David James and Lucy Mae Powell Pridgen. Hazel is survived by her three sons, Charles Lewis Diggs, II (wife, Lee) of Granbury, Texas, Ned Battle Diggs, Jr. (of the home) of Bullock, N.C., and William Joseph Betts, Jr. Daughter Vicki Diggs Watkins (husband, E. Everett Watkins, Jr.) of Prospect Hill, N.C. Grandsons, Charles Lewis Diggs,III (wife, Leah) of Durham, N.C., Justin David Diggs (wife Elaine and Elaine’s daughter Lilli Ruger) of Creedmoor, N.C. Grand-daughter, Gretchyn Alys Betts (fiancé, Zachary James Whittle) of Windsor Locks, Conn. Great-grandson, Brayson James Whittle also of Windsor Locks, Conn. Hazel was born in Virginia but lived many years in Chapel Hill, N.C. (Chatham County) and later years in Durham, N.C. and her final years at Kerr Lake, Bullock, N.C. Hazel attended and graduated from public schools in Durham, N.C. After graduation she attended business school in Durham, N.C. Hazel worked as the administrative secretary for the Town Manager of Chapel Hill, N.C. for many years. She later worked at Balfour Company, Durham, N.C. She retired with the City of Durham as the assistant to the City Clerk. Hazel loved camping, horseback riding in her early years then her life at Kerr Lake in her final years. Hazel enjoyed riding her pontoon, reading good books, especially her Bible. Hazel was a member of Bullock Baptist Church, Bullock, N.C. for many years. She enjoyed the many activities she shared with the Keenagers of the church. The family wishes to express their many thanks to the Amedysis Hospice staff for the compassionate care delivered to our mother. Also many thanks to Dr. Eugene Day, his nurse, Lisa and the staff of the office. As a family, we thank all those that sent cards, made visits and phone calls that supported mother and us through her illness. A memorial service will be forthcoming at a later date.
