Helen Owen Whaley, age 90, passed suddenly on August 21, 2022, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Helen loved people, bringing fun and laughter to any event. She enjoyed travel, bargain hunting, and investing. With a colorful sense of humor and big heart, Helen lived life on her terms. She valued her friends, family, and her dogs. Helen Whaley was unforgettable.
Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 23, 1931, to Cecilia Thomas Whaley and Leigh C. Whaley, Helen enjoyed the blessings of growing up in Victoria, Virginia. She was active in the Girls Scouts and enjoyed being a counselor at scout camp. She graduated from Peace College (now William Peace University) in Raleigh, North Carolina and began working in Richmond, Virginia, living in the West End. Helen had a varied career in banking and real estate. She dearly loved living in Richmond and spending weekends on the Tappahannock River, aka “the Rivah.”
Helen is survived by her brother, Leigh Whaley, Jr. of Harrisonburg, Virginia; nieces Kathryn Pugh (Frank) in Leesburg, Virginia, and Susan Walsh (David) in Mechanicsville, Virginia; her nephew Cary Whaley (Silver Spring, Maryland), and her chihuahua, Buddy.
A graveside service for Helen Whaley will be held on Saturday, September 3 rd at 11:00 am at Oakhurst Cemetery, 185 Buffalo Road, Clarksville, Virginia.
