Howard Walter Wollman

February 15, 1944 — February 19, 2020

Howard Walter Wollman, Jr. of Virginia Beach and Buggs Island Lake, Virginia lost his battle with lung cancer and left us on February 19th for better fishing, beautiful sunsets and eternal campfires by the lake. Howard was born on February 15, 1944 to Howard Walter Wollman and Berenice Winalski Wollman in New Britain, Connecticut. His mother wanted a Valentine Baby but missed by 15 minutes. To his family, he was dubbed “Mick” or “Mickey” and that is how he was known throughout his early life through high school and to his Connecticut family and friends. He would want to thank his parents, Howard and Berenice, for a wonderful early life and for providing everything necessary for a successful adult life. He joined the United States Airforce upon graduation in 1961 from Farmington High School, and spent 4 years in the Airforce learning the skills to later become a highly successful aeronautical engineer. After leaving the service, he worked in private industry for a while, including Chandler Evans, where he worked as a fuel control specialist and troubleshooter, and Hamilton Standard, as a fuel control technician, before starting employment with the Department of Navy at the Naval Aviation Depot (previously the Naval Air Rework Facility) in Norfolk, Virginia in the early 70’s. The accomplishment he was most proud of was his design and development, in 1986, of a jet engine maintenance system using barcodes for tracking. The system was to be exported Navy-wide to other depots. He received a Special Achievement Award for this project. He retired from federal service in 1996. Howard always said he could fix anything and it was true, from jet engines to golf carts and boats and cars, he could do it all! He was happiest at his lake house, which he finished building himself, after retiring. He loved the beauty of the lake and area; he was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. He put all of his skills to work, and became quite a friend to the lake community, helping anyone who needed helping. One of his greatest joys was hosting “Granddaddy Camp” for 3 years with his grandfather friends and all of their 21 grandchildren plus some of the neighborhood children as well. Howard leaves behind his loving wife, Laraine Debold Bock, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, daughters Laura Wollman Ingram, Kymberli Tamara Wollman, stepson, ChrisBock, stepdaughter, Megan BockCommander and son-in-law, Christian Commander; son/grandson Howard Logan Wollman, andgrandchildren Kenneth Ray Ingram, Lindsay Amanda Ingram, Matthew Turner Ingram, and Sydney Grace Commander; a sister, Leslie Ames of Vernon, Connecticut; brothers Gary and Stanley Wollman, their wives of Texas and Massachusetts, respectively; numerous Wollman nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held in Virginia Beach on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 pm at the Holloman Brown Funeral Home, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, Va. In lieu of flowers, Howard’s special request was “to stock the lake with bass” for future fisherpeople and future Grandaddy Camps. But the family has found this request to be unfillable through any state agency or organization.Other organizations that Howard was fond of and supported was St. Jude Children’s Hospital and The Salvation Army.
