Neal Quentin Herrick, a revered scholar, avid sailor, and passionate advocate for workers' rights, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Born on Thursday, September 22, 1927, Neal lived a rich and fulfilling life of 97 years, marked by remarkable achievements and profound contributions to society.
A distinguished academic, Neal earned his Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of New Hampshire before pursuing a doctorate in Industrial Relations from the Union Graduate School. His illustrious career led him to the University of Michigan, where he served as a visiting professor, inspiring the minds of many future leaders.
Neal's professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. Throughout his lifetime, he embraced an array of roles—from being a sailor, soldier, and construction worker to serving as a door-to-door salesman, journalist, assistant college football coach, peace activist, claims examiner, policy analyst, and government official. Neal worked in the U.S. Department of Labor for more than a decade and was the Director of the Office of Policy. Through each position, Neal demonstrated his unwavering commitment to justice and equality, epitomized by his instrumental role in drafting the OSHA Act submitted to Congress in 1967.
As an accomplished author, Neal co-authored, edited, and wrote four books on public policy issues, with his final work, *After Patrick Henry: The Second American Revolution*, earning widespread acclaim. His literary contributions were celebrated with prestigious accolades, including the IPPY Gold Medal for "Best Books of 2009" in the "Freedom Fighters" category and the Silver Medal for "Best Books of 2009 in the Political Science Category" from Foreword Reviews.
Despite his many professional commitments, Neal always prioritized family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Yuanyuan Zhang Herrick. He leaves four children: Peter, Kenneth, Julia and Elizabeth, and five grandchildren Jesse, Virginia, Sam, Jacob and Gus. He also leaves two great grandchildren William and Jackson.
In honor of Neal's wishes, the Cremation Society of Virginia is handling his arrangements. His legacy of compassion, intellect, and determination will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him. Neal Quentin Herrick will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a champion for workers' rights and a steadfast advocate for social justice.
